Happy Heritage Day!

What? You didn’t know when Heritage Day was/is?  Yeah, neither did I. It was on President’s day and a local mortuary has a Heritage Festival to celebrate our American Heritage. (not sure why it’s held at the mortuary, maybe because all our Founding Fathers are dead.)

We saw the liberty bell…..  DING   DONG

There was pretty good marching band that didn’t do too much marching. They just stayed in the shade and played.

We saw some reptiles and their skin….

We got to take photos with George Washington….

We rode in a stage coach….  The local route was from Sacramento to Montana. And it only took NINE DAYS to get there!  On dusty and bumpy roads.

The kids made fabric dolls to play with…..maybe that would make the 9 day trip not as boring….

Jacob learned how to lasso a bull….and was really good..He got it his first try!

The kids nailed the last spikes for the railroad….

We saw an old time medicine/magic show….

And drove in an old car, made in 1901 and the man who owns it still drives it all over town!

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!

So, we kinda got a new pet to replace Smokey.

A neighbor got remarried, and his new wife had a cat. But he is very allergic to cats so it can’t be in the house.  Well, it wandered over to our house and we let it in the house.

It now thinks that this is his home. He is a nice kitty. We have never had a kitty that we could actually pet without getting scratched.  We hear his name is “Spices” but we call him Smokey….for old times sake.

He mainly sleeps all day….I mean ALL day!

Spices/Smokey even let Hannah and Jacob dress him up in hair clips!

On a non-related but kinda note, we went to a family dinner last week and we brought dessert. Here it is… What does it look like?

What? You think it looks like a kitty litter box?  Ha ha….Good!  It’s called “Kitty Litter Cake” and everyone loved it!  After they got over the thought of eating it.

Maidu Indians

Last Saturday we went to the new Maidu Indian Museum here in Roseville. They have been building a new big museum to replace the trailer they had been in for years.

It was a very nice museum. We learned that long ago, when the Maidu tribe settled here in Roseville, they had to face many hardships, including the white man forcing the kids to go to schools to learn how to be “un-indianized” meaning they had to forget all their ways, cut their hair, and look and act like the white man.  It was not a very nice thing for them. They were being forced to loose all their heritage.

There is a one mile walk around the grounds where the Indians used to live.

There are alot of grinding rocks….

and even a few rocks with petroglyphs in them.

It was a really nice spring like day and we loved being outdoors!

Happy Birthday Hannah!

In Feb, Hannah celebrated her 8th birthday!  She was so excited! She was going to get her ears pierced.

Here she is in the “chair” getting it done. She said it only hurt a little.

Daddy was wondering where all the little cylinders of ear go that used to be where the hole is? Do they just throw them away? Do they end up on the floor and then they vacuum them up?  Do they recycle them?  Hmmmmm……

Also during this week, her school was having a special daddy-daughter evening with dancing, photo taking, desserts, games and all sorts of fun things to do.

Unfortunately, since Doug’s chemo was delayed a week, this fell during his “bad week” and was unable to attend.  A very nice neighbor who also has a daughter in Hannah’s class, took her instead.  She had fun, but wished her dad was with her.  Next year!!

Hannah had a special barbie cake that she loved.

She loved all her presents, and got a special monogrammed towel from Grandma Bingham!  Thanks Grandma! It goes with her special monogrammed pillow case that she sleeps on every night!

Of course, we had the spanking train – and nobody got hurt this time!

Later that week, she got to go with mom and dad on a special date of her choosing for dessert, and she chose wisely – Cheesecake Factory! Yum!

Happy Birthday Hannah!
