Let The Winds Begin!

December, and it was a beautiful day!  Good enough to go to San Fran.  Actually, little known fact, the "winter" time in San Fran is often better days than the "summer".  The summer months have more fog and are cooler.

We did a free walking tour, this time of the west end of the Golden Gate Park, specifically, the two windmills that are there.

It was a beautiful setting, and we got to learn about these one of a kind windmills.   The "Dutch" (North) windmill was built in 1903 and was the 2nd largest windmill like this in the world.  The Dutch windmill was patterned after windmills in Denmark.  It's the windmill with the round tower.

The "Murphy" (South) windmill was built in 1908 and was the largest windmill of this type.  So the two largest windmills like these are in Golden Gate Park.

When Golden Gate Park was first built, it was built on huge sand dunes from the ocean. Nobody wanted the land and nothing would grow.  It was always windy and sand blew everywhere. The sand dunes went as far as a mile inland.

When the idea of planting things in the sand became a reality in the 1870's and 1880's, San Francisco had only one water company.  This part of the park was so far away, the water company charged HUGE fees and rates for the water.  At the beginning of 1900, it was decided the water fees were just too much.  Wells were dug instead, and the first windmill was built to use the wind to power the pump for the water.  The first windmill was such a success, a 2nd was built not far from the first to provide additional water for the park.  At it's peak, each windmill could pump 30-40 thousand gallons of water per HOUR!

The pumps no longer work, but the sails and motors have been repaired and the sails actually do turn in the wind.

Of course, we had to stop off at Pier 39 for a bit......

Marissa's Turn!

Not to be outdone by Meghan, Marissa wanted her turn at a wedding too.

So it was time to go to Utah for Thanksgiving, and for Marissa's wedding!  It was a wonderful event and we love having Matt in our family now!

Why is Hannah the only one not standing on the stairs?

Adam even came and he had a great dessert:

Here is such an awesome video of the wedding day:

Doctor Time!

Mid-October 2014

Time for more surgeries!

Finally, after chemo all year long, it was time for surgery.  We originally thought the surgery would be in May....then June...then August.....and finally now in October.  I blogged all about it on my CaringBridge site, which I am sure you are aware of.

Last Chemo!

Surgery time!

The Great Pumpkin!

Ah, fall time....

Time to go to the Pumpkin Patch.  We tried a new one this year, as it popped up on Groupon.

This one was geared more to little kids, but we still had a great time.

Of course there was the pyramid of hay....

And a creative huge tramp painted orange....the kids liked this one....

There were hay rides and pig races....

And huge areas of dried corn for the kids to play in.  Jacob and Hannah actually liked this the best!

And of course the corn maze.

MotoCross Races

We've never been to the "Fast Friday's" in Auburn, held every Friday night during the summer. It's motorcycle races, and they are different each Friday.

It was time to experience it.  Jacob and Hannah and I went, and it was CROWDED!  This is a HUGE event every Friday!

And much to our surprise, about half of the races were KIDS...like 10 and under years old!  Riding these motorcycles!  It was a lot of fun!

Very noisy...some crashes....and the best part? People watching!

We felt like we were the anomaly there.  We didn't have chew in our back pockets.....no tattoos....no piercings...and our clothes covered our bodies...  Very interesting to say the least!

Circus Vargas

Ladies and Gentlemen.....  Boy and Girls.....
 Time for the Circus!

Ok, not the "real" circus, but still a circus...just no animals.  Circus Vargas, you know the one with the huge, huge, huge tent that sets up at the mall parking lot for the weekend.  We've never been to this circus, and from winning free tickets, why not go?

It was a little different.....without animals.......We watched the RingMaster balance tables, shopping carts and ladders on his chin....

They had the spinning wheel of death.....

And some very entertaining trampoline acts....and some high wire acts...but the lighting was such that it didn't help take good pics with the camera....so you will have to just imagine those..

Anyhow, it was fun to go, but we will stick with the 'real' circus - Barnum & Bailey...that is a FUN show to attend!

Presenting...... Mrs. Calder!

August 2014

It was time for Meghan's wedding!  I had scheduled my chemo sessions around the wedding, hoping I would be well enough to make the trip to Utah for Meghan's wedding.  Through prayers, faith and blessings, I was able to do so.

It was a beautiful wedding and reception and we are so happy for Meghan and so happy to welcome Corey into our family!

Wow - that chemo was making me lose my hair!

Here is a video that was shown at the reception.  In the middle of the video, was part of the engagement..where Jacob and Marissa were hiding..Corey had his phone on "record" in his pocket too!

Here are some more photos:

This one is my favorite:
