Heritage Trail

A few Saturday’s ago, the last Sat before Doug’s surgery, we made the best of the day.  We started out on the Heritage Trail which happens once a year and there are about 40 museums from Roseville up to Tahoe that are free. We took advantage of this and went to a few that we had never been one.

The first was a one room school in Lincoln that was started in the late 1800’s and is actually still used for community events today. Jacob and Hannah learned that they didn’t have whiteboards back then or even paper! They had to use chalkboards to write on!

We learned what this paddle was for, and Jacob thought it was funny that the teachers could spank the kids!

Here is a list of the different punishments:

We then went to a museum in Rocklin which was right downtown and it showcased all the granite that was used from Rocklin. Granite was used for buildings in San Francisco, Sacramento, and even some as far away recently in Washington DC.  Right across the street, behind some trees and behind a park sits one of the big quarries. Just hidden there tucked away. It was pretty cool.

We then went to a very impressive telephone museum in Roseville. Jacob was dialing a number as we all watched how a phone switch would figure out what number you were dialing and how it hooked you up to the person on the other end.  One problem though. Jacob didn’t know how to use this kind of phone! He started out by pressing the holes (where your fingers go) but there was nothing to press.  The museum worker had to show him how to dial using this “old fashioned” phone!  The kids thought it was cool to have a phone like that! ha ha!

We then headed “up the hill” to Grass Valley and went to the Family Fun Park, (not part of the museum but we had some free coupons we had to use up).  We went mini golfing, race car riding, batting cages and video game playing.  We had a great great time! Hannah and Jacob were especially excited because this is the only race car place we know of where they can actually drive!

Meghan really enjoyed this horse racing game. You are the jockey and you have to actually ride the horse to make it go!

The only problem was Marissa wasn’t with us. :-(  She was babysitting, but she did earn a lot of money!

Wonderful, as always!

I remember those dial up phones. We always had one, even when I was in high school. I loved it!! That's pretty funny that the kids have no idea how to use them. Wow! Who would have known we were that old??!?

Great post!
