10 Years Later….

It’s been ten years since 9-11? Really? That long ago? Doesn’t seem like 10 years!  I had just gotten to San Antonio, Texas the night before for a few days of work there.  That next morning it all happened.  Then the airports all closed down.  It was decided that the work I had come to Texas to do, would be done another time and that I should head home. But I couldn’t – there were no planes.  Me and my co-worker that I had come with had a rental car we had rented for our few days there. We couldn’t get a train ticket, or a bus ticket, so we just got in the car and started driving home from Texas. We made it a day and half before the airports opened again and we were able to fly the rest of the way home.

Since it was ‘9-11’ we wanted to do something to help our kids, one of which was not even born yet, and another not even 2 when 9-11 happened, remember the sacrifice and patriotism that occurred on that day ten years ago.

Cal Expo has a 9-11 Memorial that is usually open during the State Fair, and this year on 9-11 they opened it up free, and even included FREE parking! Can you believe it? Free parking at Cal Expo? It must be a special day!  We decided it was a good family activity to do after we got home from church.

The memorial is a work in progress and growing each year, but they have many many emotional photos and stories on display.

They have an actual piece of the steel beams that held up one of the buildings……..

There is a huge granite ball floating on water with all the names of those that were killed……..

There is a special memorial to those on Flight 93 titled “Let’s Roll”……..

Out front on the lawn, there were almost 3000 (2997) pairs of shoes representing all those that lost their lives due to 9-11.

Our visit reminded us that we live in the greatest country of all, so great that others hate us for it.  It was a time when our country all came together for a single cause.  It was a true showing of patriotism and helping one another.  It was a reminder that Freedom never has been and never will be Free.

God bless America!
