Eat My Bubbles!

So about two months ago, Marissa woke up and decided she wanted to be on the swim team.  Wow! Ma and Pa were heard to exclaim!  Yes, that would be a great experience!

You see, our family doesn’t have a lot of sports experience.  Some soccer games when the kids are little, and Meghan did a semester of Track in her Sophomore year.

So when Marissa said she wanted to be on swim team, we were all supportive!

When Marissa decides she wants to do something, she does it!  Our kids don’t swim that much, and I don’t think any of them could tell the difference between someone doing an swim stroke and someone drowning.

She proudly joined the “Chlorine Crew”

So Marissa went on her first day to swim not knowing what a ‘fly’ (Butterfly stroke) was, or what an ‘IM’ is (Individual Medley), or even how far a meter was!  What was a 500?  50 Free? 100 Relay?  Mom and Dad  didn’t even know.  Oh yeah, Marissa didn’t know how to dive either or even how to do an actual swimming stroke.

Would that deter you from joining swim team? It would me!  But not Marissa!

The team is really big with over 40 girls, and most of them have been on swim for at least a year, many longer. Marissa quickly moved up and after a few meets, is now in the middle of the pack, being faster than other ‘seasoned’ swimmers.  Her coaches are amazed at how fast she learns and they are pushing her to do events she is not comfortable with.

She was even voted ‘Swimmer of the Week’ which only a few girls get to be:

When other girls would refused to do the 200 Fly, Marissa did it when asked even though she didn’t want to.  She is setting a great example of what it means to finish something you don’t think you can!

Here she is getting ready: She’s in the middle, black suit, orange cap: (It was POURING rain at this meet. We were in the stands all with umbrellas and I think just about as wet as the swimmers!

Here are a few vids of her in action:

We are so proud of you Marissa!  We love coming to watch you swim!  You are a great example to all of us!  Keep it up our little mermaid!
