Memorial Day 08

Hey, a day off work and school! Memorial Day! What can we do today?

We started our day off by going to breakfast in Auburn at Edelweiss - a "hole in the wall" small town diner where the "regulars" outnumber 1st timers always. It's only open for lunch and dinner and has been in Auburn for over 33 years. Their claim to fame is over 45 different giant omelettes.

Then we did some geo's in Auburn. We we don't get up to Auburn much anymore since Doug's mom and dad moved to Roseville. (Doug grew up in Auburn)

This one led us to a parking lot on Old Town Auburn (where gold was first discovered) and it was on top of this old retaining wall:

Meghan found it! We then looked at the great view of the Old Courthouse in Old Town.

Our next hunt led us just down the street to a small street monument dedicated to the miners who helped make California the "Golden State". Click on the photo to see a larger size easier to read.

This one here was called "Ore or Oar" and since there was no Oar here, it had to be Ore. We figured out this old train car filled with rocks was representing "ore" and dug around in the rocks. Marissa found it. It was in a racquetball painted to look like a rock.

Then it was off to the library to find a micro cache (very small cache). I didn't focus the camera very well on the cache so it's kind of blurry!

It was hidden inside a reflector signpost. See the top of the wire holding it inside the center of the post?

We did a few other caches, but were running out of time, so we headed off to the Auburn cemetery. We wanted to put some flowers on Grandpa Petersen's (Doug's grandpa) grave, and there happened to be a cache (three of them actually) in the cemetery also. Jacob found this one in the corner right behind some poison oak.

We then had to hurry back home, as Meghan and Marissa had to go to RC Willey for a service project to raise money for girls camp. They handed out hotdogs and drinks for RC Willey's "Free hot dogs and soda" event on Memorial Day. Doug went too and was the grill master, where he single handedly grilled over 1200 hot dogs! Needless to say, they went home smelling mighty nice! ha ha! One of the girls that was helping asked what hot dogs were made out of? Beef? Turkey? Chicken? What? Doug told her all of the above. She then asked what it was? What was in it? Doug told her she didn't want to know and not to talk about it until we were done. She was confused......All afternoon she was trying to guess what hot dogs were made out of..........
